We get asked a lot of about what financial support is available for funerals, For example bereavement support payments or what funeral grants or bereavement grants are available in Scotland.

Since 2019, there has been financial support for people organising a funeral and that is called the Funeral Support Payment. This used to be administered by the DWP and was called the Funeral Expense Payment. But now it is administered through Social Security Scotland and anyone who is in receipt of certain tax credits or benefits can apply.

There is also a non-means tested funeral benefit called the  Bereavement Support Payment. If you’re under State Pension age and have a husband, wife or civil partner who has died in the last 21 months you can apply.

We operate a free bereavement support service for anyone looking for advice about organising a funeral and / or funeral costs and can provide support to people who are considering making an application for funeral financial benefits from the Scottish Government.

This free funeral helpline is run by our sister organisation – Caledonia Funeral Aid and our advice is impartial. You do not have to use us for your funeral to get this advice

We can talk you through the funeral benefits and grants and help you think through how you can afford a suitable funeral even if you have no savings or income to draw on. We are here to help families in hardship and grief through their difficult time.

Please note that because of the support we can offer, we are only really best able to help people who are currently arranging a funeral.

We are part of a charity and we are happy to support people facing debt and funeral issues even if it is a burial or they want to use a for-profit traditional funeral director.
